Suriya and Trisha’s Karuppu heads for blockbuster status despite delayed release
Suriya and Trisha’s Karuppu heads for blockbuster status despite delayed release

After a delayed release triggered by financial hurdles, Suriya and Trisha Krishnan’s Tamil action drama Karuppu has opened to a blockbuster response at the box office. Trade analyst Ramesh Bala revealed the behind-the-scenes issues that pushed the film’s release by a day and also confirmed details about its OTT premiere.

Karuppu, which was originally scheduled to release on Thursday (May 14), eventually hit cinemas on Friday (May 15) after the makers resolved last-minute financial complicationExplaining the situation, Bala said, “The producers’ previous movie didn’t do well and suffered huge losses. A lot of distributors were asking for refunds. At the same time, the makers also had to clear dues with financiers before release, which they couldn’t immediately manage. Because of these two reasons, they needed a lot of funds urgently.”He further added that actor Suriya, along with others associated with the project, stepped in to help resolve the issue. “Suriya helped. Others also stepped in. The makers pledged some future movies and assets. Finally, everything was resolved on Thursday night, which is why the movie released on Friday instead of Thursday,” he revealed.

According to Bala, the film has recorded one of Suriya’s biggest openings in recent years and is now headed towards blockbuster status. “The movie is doing very well. It has taken a blockbuster opening. In fact, it is probably Suriya’s best opening in a long time. The weekend bookings are strong and with summer holidays plus no major competition, the film is on its way to becoming a blockbuster,” he stateThe analyst also highlighted the importance of the film’s success for Trisha Krishnan, who plays the female lead opposite Suriya. “This film is important for Trisha because she hasn’t had too many releases recently. Here, she is not only the leading lady, but has also performed well. Since the movie itself is working strongly, it further adds to her stature. Right now, she is in huge demand and the success of this film only strengthens her position,” he said.

On the digital release front, Bala confirmed that Karuppu is expected to arrive on OTT within four weeks. “The OTT release should happen four weeks from now and, contrary to reports, the film will stream on Amazon Prime Video,” he revealed.

Karuppu is directed by RJ Balaji and produced by Dream Warrior Pictures. The film is written by Ashwin Ravichandran, Rahul Raj, TS Gopi Krishnan, Karan Aaravind Kumar and Rathna Kumar. Apart from Suriya and Trisha in the lead, the film also stars RJ Balaji, Natty Subramaniam, Swastika Mukherjee, Sshivada, Supreeth Reddy and Yogi Babu.

The project was officially announced in October 2024 under the tentative title Suriya 45, with principal photography beginning shortly after in Pollachi. The film features music by Sai Abhyankkar and cinematography by GK Vishnu.
